We invite you to attend the 2012 annual meeting of the Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group which will be held in Durham, UK on 4-6 January 2012 (www.vmsg2012.org). The VMSG meeting is the UK’s leading volcanology conference and we invite contributions from international colleagues as well as UK-based researchers. Please note that 4th November 2011 is also the deadline for early-bird registration rates.

The 2.5 day conference has 6 sessions as follows:

Themed session 1: Sources and reservoirs
Convenor: John Maclennan (Cambridge University)
Keynote speaker: Dr. John Armitage (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris) ‘Beyond hotspots: the importance of rift history for volcanic margin formation’
• Scope: Melt production, geochemistry, petrology, magma mingling, differentiation, crustal melting, metasomatism

Themed session 2: Magma in motion
Convenor: Mike James (Lancaster University)
Keynote speaker: Prof. Jurgen Neuberg (University of Leeds) ‘What seismology can achieve on a volcano - an overview’
• Scope: Mobilization, rheology, conduits and dykes, gas separation and percolation, magmatic fluid dynamics, volcano seismology, geodesy

Themed session 3: Eruptions and emissions
Convenor: Sue Loughlin (BGS Edinburgh)
Keynote speaker: TBA
• Scope: Eruption style, degassing, physical volcanology, plumes, tephra dispersal, flows and currents, gas chemistry, atmospheric effects, subaqueous/subglacial eruptions, volcaniclastic deposits

Themed session 4: Volcanoes and society
Convenor: Jenni Barclay (University of East Anglia)
Keynote speaker: Dr. Matt Watson (Bristol University) ‘The sky's the limit: volcanoes as analogues for climate engineering’
• Scope: Monitoring, hazard and risk, health, ash and aviation, resilience and response, mitigation, volcanoes and human history, volcanoes and culture

Research in progress
Convenor: Steve Sparks (Bristol University)
Keynote speaker: Dr. Richy Brown (Durham University) Title TBA
• Scope: All of the above. This session particularly welcomes contributions from PhD students who have not had the opportunity to present at a conference before.

VMSG Awardee Session: Advances in Research on the British/Irish Palaeogene Volcanic Province
Convenor: John Gamble (University College Cork)
Keynote speaker: Dr. Valentine Troll (Trinity College Dublin) ‘The Tertiary Rum Volcanic Centre: origin, evolution and death of a large central volcano’
• Scope: Petrology, Geochemistry, Physical Volcanology, Tectonics and Geophysics, Interdisciplinary Research.
