Recent Phreatic Activity at Rincón de la Vieja Volcano: Costa Rica.

Over the last 6 weeks Rincón de la Vieja Volcano has produced phreatic eruptions

from its active crater, filled with an acidic and hot mixed lake.

The best documented of such eruptions occurred on sept 16 ejecting sediments that covered sections of the upper north walls. Parts of such sediments (fine and superfine) were washed down the flanks producing severe pollution along the main creeks and major rivers up to 18kms away from the source. Death of several fish species was documented while an undetermined volume of sediments still wait to be removed by common heavy rains in the area.
