Dear colleagues,

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP),
in collaboration with the SISMOGENICO project at OVSICORI-UNA, is
organizing a Workshop on Seismic sources in Central America: What is
the largest earthquake each can produce? to be held from October 30th
to November 5th, 2011, in Heredia, Costa Rica.

The workshop will review the different seismic sources deriving from
the geodynamics of the region and address key scientific issues
regarding their seismogenic potential, as well as design programs to
comprehensively monitor the active deformation and evaluate the
related hazard.

The goals of the workshop are also to establish a new initiative for
cooperation in Central America and develop networks for exchange of
ideas and expertise so to facilitate capacity-building and training of
individual scientists from those countries where the need is greatest.
The workshop will include invited lectures, contributed papers and
panel discussions.

Those who wish to contribute to the workshop should include a title
and a onepage abstract together with the application form.
Presentations by participants from Central America on their specific
area of research are particularly welcome.

Participation

The workshop is open to researchers and students from all countries
which are members of the United Nations, UNESCO, or IAEA. The
principal objective of the ICTP is to help researchers from developing
countries through a programme of training activities within a
framework of international cooperation. Participants should have an
adequate working knowledge of English. Due to budget limitations,
every effort should be made by candidates to secure either total or
partial support for their expenses. However, funds are available
exclusively for a limited number of participants who are nationals of,
and working in, Central American countries. Participants are
required to take part in all aspects of this activity for its entire
duration. There is no registration fee.

DEADLINE
20 SEPTEMBER 2011
Applications are to be submitted online through the activity webpage

Peace on Earth,
Marino Protti
