Dear volcanophiles and friends,

a strong paroxysm (nr 5 in 2011) occurred from the pit crater at the SE
flank of Etna's SE crater on 9 July. The eruption started with
approximately 8 hours of slowly increasing strombolian activity since the
morning of 9 July. After around 14h30 local time, the intensity rapidly
increased and turned into high lava fountaining lasting for ca. 1.5-2 hrs,
generating a tall tephra column and producing heavy ash fall S-SE of the
summit area. The eruption waned at around 17h00 and stopped around 18h00.

Tom Pfeiffer, together with Etna mountain guides and other people, were
lucky to be able to observe the eruption from as close as safely possible,
from locations west of the tephra rain. A set of photos is found at:

Many greetings,
Tom
