Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I would like to invite you to attend the MAKAVOL 2011 Teneguía Workshop (Fuencaliente, La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain; October 24-28, 2011), an international volcano meeting for commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1971 Teneguía eruption; the last eruption in the Canary Islands (please find the First Circular in the attached document). MAKAVOL 2011 Teneguía Workshop is one of the three international volcano meetings co-organized by the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables, ITER (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain), the Laboratório de Engenharia Civil de Cabo Verde (LEC), the Universidade de Cabo Verde (Uni-CV), and the Serviço Nacional de Protecção Civil (SNPC) from Cape Verde under the framework of the project "Strengthening the capacities of R+D+i+d to contribute reducing volcanic risk in the Macaronesia (MAC/3/C161)" co-financed by EU Transnational Cooperation Program Madeira-Canarias-Azores (MAC 2007-2013) with the collaboration of the Observatório Vulcanológico e Geotérmico dos Açores (OVGA), Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (INVOLCAN), Fundación Canaria ITER, Spanish Volcanological Society (SVE) and the Canary Islands Association of Volcanology (AVCAN). MAKAVOL 2011 Teneguía Workshop is planned as an international forum for specialists working on active volcanic regions to discuss about reducing volcanic risk with empahsis on volcanic islands. Scientific and technical discussions will be mainly related to volcanic risk managment in the Macaronesia ecoregion and other active volcanic regions as well as to enhance know-how exchange to understand and improve the multi-disciplinary initiatives for reducing volcanic risk. MAKAVOL 2011 Teneguía Workshop will be also an ideal forum to discuss about the plus side of living in active volcanoes since the short-term hazards posed by volcanoes are strongly balanced by benefits of volcanism over geologic time. MAKAVOL 2011 Teneguía Workshop, it will be also the ideal framework for the V Meeting of the Spanish Volcanological Network.
MAKAVOL 2011 Teneguía Workshopwill focus on the following topics:
ØVolcanic monitoring
ØVolcanic hazard and risk assessments
ØLarge volcano gravitational lanslides & related tsunamis
ØVolcanic emergency plans
ØVolcanic risk: perception, education and communication
ØVolcanoes: resources & oportunities (geotourism, geothermal, etc.)
