Applications are invited for a NASA-funded PhD position at Michigan Technological University. The overall goal of the project is to devise new strategies for monitoring of volcanic activity and volcanic eruptions using satellite observations from NASA's A-Train spacecraft constellation. The project will involve collaboration with the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Three years of PhD student support are available for the project.

We are interested in candidates with strong backgrounds in either geosciences or atmospheric sciences. Computer programming skills and experience with satellite data processing are assets. Interested candidates should send their CV and a brief statement of interest to Simon Carn (scarn@xxxxxxx).

Michigan Tech is located in Houghton, MI, USA on the southern shore of Lake Superior. The university has a total student population of about 7000. The location is a superb outdoor environment far from cities, on the largest and most pristine of the Great Lakes and the midcontinental rift, Earth’s first continental flood basalt province, with excellent skiing, cycling, kayaking and wilderness activities. Cost of living is low, and independent environmentalism is a way of life. PhD programs are offered in Geology, Geological Engineering, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences. Interested candidates can learn more about the department programs, courses, and research at http://www.geo.mtu.edu
