Applicants are invited for a fully-funded PhD position at Massey University in New Zealand starting mid 2011 as part of our research program “Flow, erosion and deposition dynamics in volcanic mass flows”.
Lahars, debris flows and related sediment-rich floods are some of the most frequent killers at volcanoes worldwide. Their enormous capacity to transport debris over huge distances puzzles geologists, hydrologists, physicists and hazard managers alike. Opportunities to obtain direct measurements from a moving lahar for better understanding of their underlying physics have been rarely seized. Previously successful attempts revealed important insights into lahar transport and transformation behavior. However, flow information was fragmentary, hindering a quantitative analysis of their longg-range destructiveness.
The project aims at investigating how erosion and deposition processes operating in violent laharic mass flows influence their runout dynamics and destruction potential. Quantitative data of fluid-particle transport, erosion and deposition will be obtained through directly measuring active lahars in motion and through analogue laboratory experiments. These data will be used to develop testable physical relationships to better understand and predict lahar hazards.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in either geophysics, physical Volcanology or a related discipline with emphasis in geophysical mass flows, fluid dynamics or sedimentology. Excellent team work skills are required.
