Field Trip Opportunities at IUGG 2011

We would really like you to consider registering for a field trip as part of your IUGG 2011 program.  What a great way to experience and learn about a world-class volcanic region on your way to or from the IUGG General Assembly.  Admittably field trips are an added conference expense, but, considering what's on offer, they are very good value for money and provide you with a rare and valuable career development opportunity.

The field trips of interest to IAVCEI delegates on offer at IUGG 2011 are listed below. Please especially take note of field trip VF10 which has a modified itinerary and lower fee than was previously advertised.  For detailed field trip information visit www.iugg2011.com/fieldtrips.asp. You can register for a field trip using the IUGG 2011 online registration form.  If you have already registered for IUGG 2011 you can re-enter the registration form using your Access Key.  Please also note that the deadline for registration and payment of field trips is APRIL 11.

IAVCEI FIELD TRIPS

VF01: "Factors that influence eruption styles from magmatic to phreatomagmatic in intraplate basaltic volcanic fields: the Newer Volcanics Province of southeastern Australia."  This is the youngest and arguably the only still active volcanic province in Australia…and right on the doorstep of Melbourne!

VF02: "The Whitsunday Silicic Large Igneous Province: An IAVCEI Large Igneous Provinces Commission Field Workshop."   Don’t be fooled by the price of this field trip.  Here you will get the opportunity to cruise the Whitsunday Islands on Australia’s famous Great Barrier Reef, stepping off each day on different islands to examine the spectacular exhumed volcanic sequences of a Silicic Large Igneous Province.  It is also the best time of year to visit the Whitsundays.

VF04: "Tertiary submarine basaltic volcanism, Cape Grim and Stanley, NW Tasmania"  Cape Grim and Stanley in picturesque northwestern Tasmania provide excellent examples of pillow lavas, lava lobes, megapillows, pillow fragment breccias, peperite, and basaltic intrusions

VF05: "Auckland Volcanic Field: basaltic volcanism and society"  This is New Zealand's youngest and active basaltic field beneath the country's largest city.  This one-day field trip is an ideal stopover for delegates departing Melbourne via the Pacific Ocean, or for those wishing to also attend field trip VF06 (see below) which starts the following day.

VF06: "Young caldera volcanism: Taupo and Okataina"

This is the best way to visit one of the most intense loci of active rhyolitic volcanism in the world, the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Three intense sustained eruptions have occurred here in the last 2000 years, two of which are the holotypes for ultraplinian and phreatoplinian explosions and low aspect ratio ignimbrites (Taupo 233) and basaltic Plinian eruptions (Tarawera 1886) respectively.

VF09: Prehistoric and recent deposits of Mayon and Taal volcanoes

This field trip will visit some of the active volcanic areas of the Philippines.  Note that the current increased volcanic risk at Mayon and Taal may alter the itinerary shown on the IUGG 2011 website. Please contact the leader directly for further details.

VF10: Grace and Hazard of LUSI, and Bromo and Ijen Volcanoes

This field trip will visit the active and devastating LUSI mud volcano, and two of Indonesia's 'graceful' and hazardous volcanoes.  Due to current volcanic and sea hazards, the previously advertised Semeru/Krakatau component has now been been replaced with a visit to Ijen crater lake. This new field trip itinerary now has a significantly lower fee, and this information is currently in the process of being updated on the IUGG 2011 website.

VF11: Rabaul Caldera

When are you next going to get an opportunity to visit Rabaul caldera? This field trip will examine Rabaul's recent and earlier caldera-forming deposits, as well as a visit to the Rabaul Volcano Observatory.

The following IAPSO and IASPEI field trips may also be of interest to IAVCEI delegates. See www.iugg2011.com/fieldtrips.asp for further details.

PF01: The Australian 'mega-tsunami' debate

SF01: Where the plate boundary meets the Capital: Active faults and earthquakes in and around Wellington, New Zealand.

Please note that due to unavoidable circumstances, field trips VF03, VF07 and VF08 (see the IUGG website) have now been cancelled.
