Dear Colleagues,

We cordially invite you to join us in Taipei in early August at AOGS 2011, for a session on Volatiles in Volcanic Processes.

The 8th Annual Meeting of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) will be held in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

The idea behind the session is to bring together some of the major regional and international players in volcanic volatiles research, particularly for Southeast Asia, however any relevant contributions are very welcome.

The abstract deadline is March 15th, more details can be found at http://www.asiaoceania.org/aogs2011/

Session SE52: Volatiles in Volcanic Processes

Convener(s):

Florian Schwandner (Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), NTU, Singapore),
Tsanyao Frank Yang (National Taiwan University, Taiwan),
Takeshi Ohba (Tokai University, Japan),
Fidel Costa (Earth Observatory of Singapore, Singapore).

The Asia-Oceanic region hosts some of the world’s most exciting and active volcanoes, situated around the ring of fire where eruptions often occur in zones of high population density. Volatile contents and composition play a fundamental role in the pressurization, ascent, and eruption of magma, as well as its quiescent degassing.
We welcome contributions from studies of volatiles from pre-eruptive conditions to syn-eruptive degassing, and their application to understanding magmatic unrest, including but not limited to:
(1) petrological-geochemical studies of melt and fluid inclusions, including volatiles recycling in subduction zones and primary mantle devolatilization, timing of separation and the mode of delivery of volatiles to the surface, and modeling of magmatic degassing and eruption processes;
(2) volcanic and hydrothermal gas geochemistry, including volcanic gas geochemistry, gas-aquifer interactions, scrubbing and sequestration, volatile sublimation, atmospheric volcanic gas and aerosol chemistry and physics;
(3) operational monitoring of volatile degassing (CO2, SO2, halogens, reduced species, noble gases, trace compounds) in plumes, fumaroles, hot springs, wells, and lakes;
(4) novel instrumental and monitoring techniques, as well as multi-disciplinary approaches.
Contributions to regional or local studies of Asia-Oceanic volcanic systems are particularly encouraged.

Preliminary List - Invited Speakers

(1) Chris Newhall, Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), Singapore.
(2) Minoru Kusakabe, University of Toyama, Japan.
(3) Maricar Arpa, PHIVOLCS, Philippines.
(4) Hsiaofen Lee, National Taiwan University, Taiwan.
(5) Hanik Humaida, BPPTK (CVGHM), Indonesia.
(6) Bruce Christenson, GNS, New Zealand.
