Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to participate in the 11th International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, 10 to 16 July 2011 and to submit abstracts for the following session:
25. Role of Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatism in the evolution of Antarctica
“Magmatism and associated volcanic eruptions have played an important role in the development of Antarctica. Of special interest is the widespread eruption of flood basalts during the Jurassic and their role in the initial fragmentation of Gondwana and Cenozoic volcanism associated with rifting in West Antarctica. There is also a rich record of volcanism preserved in ice cores as tephra and acid layers and volcanoes interacting with and preserving physical parameters of Cenozoic ice sheets. Contributions on any of these aspects are invited, including field, geophysical and geochemical studies of volcanoes and older volcanic and intrusive rocks throughout Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic Islands.”
The session will provide a major focus and showcase for volcanic and magmatic studies. The main aim is to bring together a broad range of contributions dealing with magmatism and volcanism and especially their links with understanding palaeoenvironments and the tectonic evolution of the Antarctic plate.
The deadline for registration is 8 July 2011 (early registration: 31 March 2011), and the deadline for submission of abstracts is 31 March 2011.
