Dear Colleagues,
we
included a new session on volcanic geomorphology in the next 2011 EGU
programme. If interested, please consider submitting an abstract to this
session.

New methods and concepts in volcanic geomorphologyConvener: Dávid Karátson

The recent years have seen the onset of applications of new and emerging techniques of remote sensing, geoinformatics, geomorphometry, numerical modelling as well as dating techniques and experimental methods in volcanic geomorphology. This wealth of data is about to be integrated on various scales of volcanic edifices scaling from large stratovolcanoes down to scoria cones and other volcanic features.
New results in volcanic edifice evolution on various time scales offer insight into rates of degradation, evolution of drainage systems of volcanic cones and age patterns of the surface. Climatic influence, lithological control, tectonic influence and the initial geomorphic pattern of volcanic field may complicate the evolution of the volcano-geomorphic setting.
This session aims at integration of knowledge in the aforementioned fields providing opportunity to exchange experience and to formulate new research questions for the research community.
The session includes topics such as
- new results, most recent outcomes of process-oriented volcanic geomorphology: improved classification of volcanic landforms and their evolutionary stages, with respect to tectonic and geographic setting, lithology, climate;
- time-space patterns and rates of growth and destruction of volcanic landforms and landscapes;

new methods on how volcanic landforms, landscapes, and their evolution
can be studied: field methods, laboratory (experimental) methods,
DEM-based morphometry, morphometric modelling.
