Great opportunity: Global Volcanism Program job opening

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

The following job announcement for a position in the Smithsonian Institution’s Department of Mineral Sciences was distributed earlier through Volcano Listserv. However, I want to put in an additional unsolicited plug for the opportunity it represents. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), parent organization of the Global Volcanism Program (GVP). I also headed a team that reviewed the GVP a few years ago. And Volcano Listserv, which I started in the early days of email, has had a communication partnership with the GVP for over 20 years.

As the main clearing house for information about eruptions around the world, the GVP plays a unique role in volcanology. As part of the NMNH, the GVP also has access to one of the largest and best-inventoried collections of volcanic rocks, and a tremendous archive of volcano photographs and films. Although there may be a tendency to think of the Smithsonian, or any museum, as stodgy, dusty anachronisms, that is not at all the case. The GVP and NMNH work with technology companies like Google, federal agencies like NASA, NOAA, USGS, DOE and the State Department, and representatives from nearly all of the world’s volcanically-active countries. In addition to carrying on their own research, the new hire in the Department of Mineral Sciences will be part of one of the largest K-12 and public outreach operations in the world, and will have the chance to work with officials from private and public sector organizations concerned with natural hazards. The experience gained will be richer in many ways than what is available to tenure-track faculty members at universities.

The new hire will be part of a team that has the unusual chance to redefine how comprehensive observational and geochemical datasets get used to mitigate volcanic dangers.

The closing date is August 17.

Note: The following position is the government equivalent of "tenure track" with potential to convert to a permanent position at the end of the four year term.

Research Geologist. Department of Mineral Sciences, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. The Department of Mineral Sciences invites applications for an entry-level research position in volcanology. The successful applicant will also work with the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program, which documents and researches activity of the world's volcanoes toward development of space/time understandings of global activity. Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent, with subsequent experience in volcanology focusing primarily on physical volcanology, as demonstrated by publications with high impact in the peer-reviewed literature. The person selected will have had experience working on volcanoes, using field and laboratory or data analysis techniques, ideally also with experience in utilizing large data sets placing volcanoes in regional and global context. In addition to research, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in museum activities, such as exhibits programs, educational outreach activities, and to be involved with professional associations and other organizations within the scientific community. Additional information about the department (including our lab facilities) and the Global Volcanism Program can be found at our web site (http://mineralsciences.si.edu/).

This is a full-time, 4-year term appointment with full Government benefits; US citizenship required. The position is at the GS-1350-12 level ($74872-77368 per annum depending on qualifications). For complete requirements and application procedures go to www.sihr.si.edu and refer to Announcement 10A-MR-296088-DEU-NMNH or contact Madalyn Robinson, 202-633-6339 robinsonm@xxxxxx.  The announcement opens July 6, 2010. Applications must be received by August 17, 2010 and must reference the announcement number. All applications will be notified by email when their application is received. The Smithsonian Institution is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
