Dear Colleagues,

We would like to let you know about upcoming conference events related to volcano monitoring and geoscience education. The first is a GSA Short course on “Using Online Volcano Monitoring Data in College and University Courses: The Volcano Exploration Project, Pu`u `O`o (VEPP)” which will address the use of real- and near-real-time volcano monitoring data in college and university geoscience courses.

The short course will be held on Saturday, October 30, 8 AM – 12 PM at the 2010 Annual GSA meeting in Denver, Colorado.  The purpose of the course is to inform participants about volcano-monitoring techniques used in Hawaii and introduce an educational Web site that provides near-real-time volcanological data from the Pu`u `O`o eruptive vent at Kilauea Volcano.  Specific examples for utilizing the Web site in different college and university geoscience classes such as introductory geology, volcanology, natural disasters, and geology of national parks will also be discussed.  Registration deadline is September 27, 2010, and the cost is $84.00 (which includes continental breakfast and wi-fi access for hands-on demonstrations).  Additional information is available at http://www.geosociety.org/meetings/2010/courses.htm.

In addition, related conference symposia, titled “Using Real- and Near-Real-Time Data in the Classroom,” will be convened at the Annual GSA meeting (session T46) and Fall AGU meeting (session ED06). The sessions will focus on the use of Internet-accessible data in the classroom, emphasize resources that provide real- or near-real-time data related to dynamic Earth processes, and highlight examples of successful practices of classroom implementation with these data.

GSA abstract deadline: August 10
AGU abstract deadline: September 2

If you have questions about the short course or meeting sessions, please contact Mike Poland (mpoland@xxxxxxxx).  We look forward to seeing you in Denver and San Francisco!

Thank you,
Mike Poland, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Kaatje Kraft, Mesa Community College
Rachel Teasdale, California State University, Chico
