LABORATORIO DI GEOCHIMICA E VULCANOLOGIA.
DIPARTIMENTO DI SCIENZE
UNIVERSITÀ G. D’ANNUNZIO
FIRST CARBONATITE AND ALKALINE ROCK SCHOOL
SAN VENANZO (ITALY)
29TH SEPTEMBER - 1ST OCTOBER 2010

The extrusive carbonatites have been considered rare rocks, but the numerous occurrences associated with alkaline rocks recently discovered in Spain and France put a new light on their importance in post-Cenozoic,European volcanism. In Italy there are some of the finest examples of outcrops of extrusive carbonatite, which are associated, in space and time, with kamafugites and foidites. Therefore, they provide a particularly useful field area with which the new generation of researchers in carbonatite and alkaline rocks may become familiar. The school is organised to include both theoretical and hands-on training in extrusive carbonatites and alkaline rocks, offering a comprehensive overview of their volcanological, petrological and geochemical features. The three day school will be held in the Civil Museum of San Venanzo (Central Italy). It will be organised into morning sessions involving frontal teaching while during the afternoons fieldwork will be undertaken at San Venanzo, Colle Fabbri, Polino and the Vulsini Volcanic Complex. Dr. Alan Woolley, Dr. Frances Wall and Prof. Francesco Stoppa will lecture on a range of topics including the nature of carbonatite-alkaline complexes, intrusive and extrusive carbonatites, their petrology, mineralogy and chemistry, temporal and spatial distribution, volcanological features of extrusive carbonatites, fenitization, petrogenesis and economic aspects. Prof. Ken Bailey has also invited to present details of his new discoveries of extrusive carbonatites in Spain and France. The school is restricted to 24 participants: undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD students and researchers.

The individual fee is 125 EUR. It comprises six nights Bed
and Breakfast accommodation at Relais Villa Valentini (http://
www.relaisvillavalentini.com) and internal transfer to the fieldwork
areas. Meals and beverages will be at agreed prices (packed lunch 7 EUR, dinner 10 EUR both to be booked in advance).

Accommodation is provided from the 28th September to the 3rd of October inclusive and will allow the participants to take part in the cultural and social activities for the Volcano Festival held in San Venanzo at the end of the school.
