GVP and VOGRIPA have been collaborating during the past few years and will continue to do so as GVP expands its database into the Pleistocene.  Steve Sparks, Sian Crosweller and other VOGRIPA colleagues have met on several occasions with GVP staff to discuss collaboration and integration of VOGRIPA and GVP data, and a special session on volcanic databases at the last AGU meeting in San Francisco discussed these and other collaborations, including that with the WOVOdat group led by Chris Newhall.

I agree with Rodney-the Smithsonian's GVP has been the standard repository for global volcano data for over 30 years. Better to partner with them than to develop a competing database.

Colleagues
Perhaps this is something to be discussed at the COV meeting but the first thought I have on this proposal is how it relates to the Smithsonian GVP which presents a good deal of information on volcanoes around the globe and their eruption history.

VOGRIPA Forum at COV in Tenerife

Dear colleagues,
To those of you attending the forthcoming Cities on Volcanoes meeting in Tenerife at the end of the month, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a forum taking place on Friday 4 June regarding the VOGRIPA project being coordinated by myself and Steve Sparks from the University of Bristol.
The aim of VOGRIPA is to create a global database of volcanic eruptions including data on both hazards and risk, which will be publically accessible and contributable. The database development is progressing such that it should be publishable by the end of the year, therefore your input at this stage is vital in making the database as comprehensive and useful as possible.  Participants are invited to suggest how they might make use of such a database, the data they would find most useful, and therefore actively contribute to creating a tool that would be useful for volcanologists around the world.
The forum will be held on Friday 4 June from 14.00-15.00 in the Retama Hall.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Dr Sian Crosweller
