Masters in Volcanology and Geological Hazards at Lancaster University,
UK
This one-year Masters (MSc) course provides ideal training for future
volcanologists amongst one of largest groups of volcanologists and
environmental scientists in the UK. You can specialize in volcanology or
diversify with courses that address other geological hazards. You will
undertake modules that provide training in volcanic processes from a
theoretical, laboratory-based and field perspective. Related modules
include Risk Assessment and Management, Geo-risk Warning Systems,
Environmental Informatics and many others. We also offer additional
non-assessed training in numerical skills that will be useful for many
students.
The fieldwork includes trips to study an active volcano (Etna), as well
as to fascinating Ordovician volcanic rocks close to Lancaster. You will
also be able to define and carry out a volcano-related research project
in collaboration with one of the many internationally-recognized experts
in the Lancaster Environment Centre <http://www.lec.lancs.ac.uk/> . Our
areas of research expertise include subglacial eruptions in Iceland,
basaltic lava flow emplacement, ash generation and transport, and the
source mechanisms of volcanic earthquakes.
The MSc is designed to attract students from a wide range of backgrounds
and prepares you for work in volcano observatories or environmental
agencies, or for further research. Lancaster is one of Britain's top
teaching and research universities, consistently ranked amongst the
leading universities in the UK. Applications from UK and overseas
students are equally welcomed.
