POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH MULTIMETHOD GEOPHYSICIST

Geothermy
Speciality      Researcher man/woman
Fixed-term: one year
Country France
Région  Centre
Town    ORLEANS

Description of position:
The BRGM (www.brgm.fr) is France's leading public research institute in Earth Science applications for managing the subsurface. Its two major objectives are understanding geological processes and providing and diffusing the necessary tools for resource and risk management.

BRGM's Geothermal Energy Department is offering a one-year post-doctoral research post in multimethod geophysics applied to "high-temperature" geothermics. The successful applicant will have a doctorate in the processing of multimethod geophysical data.

The post, based in Orléans (France), is planned for 1 June 2010.

Background to the research

The developed Bouillante high-temperature geothermal field (15 MWe installed capacity) is part of a geothermal province that underlies along the western edge of Basse-Terre Island (Leeward Coast) in Guadeloupe (France). Although the Bouillante reservoir below the power station has been explored, our geological knowledge of the overall province is limited mainly to local surface observations. This gap hinders a correct assessment of the province's geothermal potential whereas the energy issue is strategic for Guadeloupe Island.

Consequently, a proposed study within a BRGM R&D project is to develop all the geophysical data that is available at the scale of this geothermal province so as to improve our knowledge of the geological structure between 0 and 10 km depth where Bouillante-type high-temperature geothermal systems are found.

The work will comprise three main tasks:
- processing the existing geophysical data derived from regional gravimetric, magnetic, electromagnetic (MT, AMT), electrical (large resistivity rectangle, dipole-dipole tomography) and seismic surveys;
- a combined geophysical interpretation, accompanied by modelling/inversion, of the processed data;
- an overall geological interpretation through transforming the petrophysical parameters derived from the various geophysical surveys into geological attributes essential for understanding the geothermal systems, plus construction of a province-scale 3D geological model of the 0-10 km depth interval using 3DGeoModeller software.

Seeked profile  The successful applicant will be skilled in:
1) processing and interpreting (i.e. modelling, inversion) grav-mag data,
2) processing and interpreting (i.e. modelling, inversion) electrical and MT data.
Knowledge of and experience in geology, geothermics and 3D modelling will be helpful.

The successful candidate is also expected to:
1) be capable of working within a multidisciplinary team;
2) maintain excellent working relationships and be disciplined in his work and respect of deadlines;
3) be experienced in writing up technical reports and scientific articles with a clear and precise
presentation of his scientific results;
4) be fluent (read, spoken, written) in both English and French (working language).

The post is open to persons with disabilities.

You covering letter, accompanied by an up-to-date CV, a summary of your work, and professional references, should be received no later than 23 April 2010
