We would like to bring to your attention and encourage contributions to the following special session in the upcoming Godschmidt conference at Knoxville, Tennessee. The session description is given below -
03b: Mantle Reservoirs and their Creation
Geochemical and geophysical studies are coming to a broad agreement that material injected into the mantle at subduction zones is responsible for much of the compositional heterogeneity in the terrestrial mantle. Recent geochemical work has highlighted the requirement for heterogeneous pyroxenite-peridotite-sediment mixtures to explain intraplate magmatism in oceanic and continental provinces. Seismic tomography studies and dynamic models persistently call for subduction of oceanic lithosphere through the 660km discontinuity and consequent return flow, or upwelling, of lower mantle into the upper mantle beneath hotspots and ocean ridges. The goal of this session is to bring together different geochemical, petrological, and geophysical approaches that constrain the origin of heterogeneous contributions to intraplate magmatism, including evidence for or against core-mantle interactions, long-lived heterogeneities in Earth’s mantle, the interplay of recycling versus metasomatism, and the role of shallow-level versus deep processes in influencing the composition of intraplate magmas.
