The focus of this fellowship is the development of gas permeability in magmas.
The fellow will determine the controls of bubble network formation and collapse
by reviewing existing decompression experiments and designing new ones so as to
complete a database of bubble coalescence in magmas of various viscosities.
Essential parameters quantifying bubble connectivity and gas permeability will
be acquired through 3D measurements of the experimental products. This will
entail, among other tasks, running the high-resolution, X-Ray microtomography
lab at ISTO. The candidate will interact with other members of a project funded
by the European Research Council that seeks to model the quantity and
composition of volcanic gases as a function of the petrology of the magma at
depth and the eruptive regime.

The appointment is for 2 years. The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in Earth
Sciences or Physics and have some experience in image analysis or experimental
petrology. Interested candidates should send a CV including a list of
publications, an electronic version (or URL) of their PhD thesis, and the name
and addresses of two referees.
