A research assistantship is available for a qualified candidate interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Igneous Petrology/Geochemistry. Preferred qualifications include a M.S., an interest in MORB petrogenesis, and analytical experience in any of the following micro-analytical techniques (electron probe microscopy, LA-ICP-MS, SIMS, TIMS). The research objective is to study and constrain processes that modify primary mantle-generation basalt compositions during crustal melt transport and residence in ultraslow to intermediate spreading rate mid-ocean ridges. The primary means of investigation will be a combined textural and geochemical study of plagioclase megacrysts and phenocrysts (and contained melt inclusions) in plagioclase ultraphyric basalts (PUB) and other plagioclase-bearing lavas. The project will be directed by Drs. Frank Tepley, Roger Nielsen and Adam Kent of the VIPER group at OSU (http://www.geo.oregonstate.edu/research_groups/viper/). We are looking for a young scientist who has an abiding interest in developing and applying microanalytical techniques to petrological and geochemical problems, starting in Fall, 2010.
Contact: Frank J. Tepley III (ftepley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx), Roger Nielsen (nielsenr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) or Adam Kent (adam.kent@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
