A PhD studentship "Storage Conditions of the Uturuncu (Bolivia) Magmas and their Temporal Evolution" is available at the University of Bristol. Applications are required by October 15, 2009.  The preferred start date is January 2010 but it is possible to start as late as July 2010.
The project is funded by the Natural and Environment Research Council (NERC) of UK.  Full funding (fees, stipend, and research costs including fieldwork in Bolivia) for 3.5 years is available for UK students.  Funding without a stipend is available for EU students.  For more information on eligibility for NERC studentships  see section B of the NERC student handbook, which is available at: <http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/application/studentships/>
The aim of this studentship is to generate petrological data on magma storage conditions and their temporal evolution beneath Uturuncu, a volcano in the Bolivian Altiplano that shows evidence for active magmatic inflation in the crust. The results will be used to inform and refine the geophysical and geodetic data that will be acquired by other researchers from the University of Bristol. The student will investigate lavas, cumulate nodules and crustal xenoliths spanning the last 1 Ma of eruptive activity. There will be a focus on thermobarometry and high pressure and temperature experimental studies to elucidate the temporal evolution of magma storage conditions for several major eruptive episodes of the volcano. The objective is to establish whether current activity represents a continuation of past behaviour, or whether a new style of magmatism is taking place. This information will inform evaluations of volcanic hazard in the area and aid the interpretation of the geophysical and geodetic data.
