The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) seeks a highly-motivated individual to operate, maintain and develop inductively coupled plasma (ICP) instrumentation in the Elemental and Stable Isotope Analytical Umbrella Core Facility (ESIA-UCF) at UCSD. Applicants with journey level skill, education, and/or a combination of education and experience in Geochemistry, Physics and/or Biology, or related fields are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will be expected to calibrate and repair instruments, instruct and assist users, develop user-specific methods, design and develop new interfaces and/or analysis software, expand user base, and participate in fiscal management of the recharge entity.

Payroll Title:  Staff Research Associate III
Appointment:  100% Career
Full Salary Range:  $41,820 - $67,248
Hiring Salary Range:  $41,820-$53,040
Qualifications:
1)  Demonstrated work experience in developing and validating numerous and diverse ICP-MS and OES methods. This includes experience with a wide variety of materials, as well as the associated highly-sensitive isotope dilution/spike analysis. Knowledge has to include fundamental concepts as well as advanced applications of these concepts to the analysis of a wide variety of samples, materials and research projects.
2)  Extensive experience with ICP-OES and ICP-MS analytical techniques, including laser-ablation analysis.
3)  Understanding of electronic circuits, vacuum components, computer hardware and software, related to ICP instrumentation. Demonstrated ability to perform electronic and vacuum repair at the component level for maintenance and repair of analytical instruments.
4)  Ability to quickly grasp both fundamental and advanced concepts of research projects and choose the appropriate instrumentation that will allow users to acquire appropriate data. This includes the ability to make suggestions on sample preparation and analysis conditions, operating parameters and sample collection. These suggestions and feedback can significantly alter the scope and direction of major research projects at SIO and UCSD.
5)  Ability to train users at all levels (students, staff, post-docs, faculty) in the proper use of ICP instruments. Ability to teach and assist new users on preparation and dilution of samples in a clean room environment for ICP-OES and/or ICP-MS analysis.
6)  Ability to learn new types of instrumentation and software, particularly other instruments associated with the Facility (elemental analyzer, isotope ratio mass spectrometer etc).
7)  Prior experience designing web based access systems.
