Dear members of the volcanological community,

We are pleased to inform you of the organization of a 4-days
workshop entitled “Research and hazard mitigation perspectives for the
active Nisyros volcanic island
(Greece)” to be held on Nisyros volcano in June of 2010 under the auspices of
the IAVCEI’s commission on explosive volcanism (CEV).

The objective of this workshop is to give the opportunity to people
interested in Nisyros to reach a comprehensive view of the geology of the
island and, for those interested, to lay the foundation for future collaboration
in research involving the geology, geochronology, geophysics, monitoring and
hazards presented by this volcano.

Nisyros is a volcanic island located in the eastern Aegean Sea
characterized by a summit
caldera 4 km in diameter hosting a vigorous hydrothermal system. Hydrothermal
craters, some formed as recently as the 19th century, dot the
caldera floor. Compositionally, products from Nisyros range from basaltic
andesites to rhyolites, some units showing evidence of magma mingling. In
addition, a wide range of explosive deposits is present, including fallout from
strombolian to plinian activity, block and ash flows and other pyroclastic
density currents. Finally, mass flow deposits (from debris avalanche, lahars,
etc.) contribute to the volcanic history in an evolving tectonic framework.

The first circular will be circulated in August of this year.

Expressions of interest are welcomed and should be sent to any of the
organizers’ e-mail
addresses:

Claudia Principe, Researcher, CNR-Pisa, Italy, c.principe@xxxxxxxxxx
Luigi Marini, Professor, Uni. Genoa, Italy, lmarini@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Loyc Vanderkluysen, Researcher, Uni. Hawaii, USA, loyc@xxxxxxxxxx
Alain Volentik, Researcher, Uni. Hawaii, USA, avolenti@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Johannes Hunziker, Professor Emeritus, Uni. Lausanne, Switzerland,
Johannes.Hunziker@xxxxxxx

Best regards,
For the organizers,
Claudia Principe
