Invitation and call for papers:

*Sixth Columbia River Basalt Symposium: Volcanism, Tectonism, and
Hydrogeology *

GSA Annual Meeting, Portland, Oregon, October 2009

Large Igneous Provinces play an important role in the evolution of the
Earth. The Columbia River Flood Basalt Province is the youngest LIP on
Earth, and one of the most accessible, where decades of research have
contributed significantly to the broader understanding of flood-basalt
provinces worldwide. The Columbia River basalts also host a regional aquifer
system throughout its extent that is in many cases the only water supply
source for numerous communities, individual homes, industry, and irrigated
agriculture worth more than 5 billion dollars annually. Portland, Oregon,
situated on the Columbia River basalt, is an ideal setting in which to
present new ideas and current research on the province. We welcome papers
on all topics including the stratigraphy (both basalt and related
sediments), flow emplacement, petrogenesis, structure and tectonic history
(including young deformation), hydrogeology (all aspects), and the role of
the province in the plume debate. Papers comparing this area to other
flood-basalt provinces are also welcome.

It has been more than 20 years since the publication of GSA Special Paper
239 *Volcanism and Tectonism in the Columbia River Flood-Basalt
Province.* The conveners would like to use this Symposium as a
springboard for a new
GSA Special Paper on all aspects of the Columbia River flood-basalt
province.
