The AIV (Associazione Italiana di Vulcanologia),
with the University of Athens and the Institute of Geology and Mineral
Exploration, Greece, remind you that the DEADLINE for the early
registration (15 JUNE 2009) at the
International Summer School of Volcanology in NISYROS, GREECE, is
approaching.

The program of the school is now available at WWW.AIVULC.IT, together with
additional details on poster session and travel information.

The School, scheduled for September 25-30 2009 at Nisyros, Dodecanese, will
deal on "Field volcanological laboratory:
the Nisyros and the adjoining volcanoes, Greece
- A window on the pre-eruptive magma processes -"

The school is aimed at providing the scientific background for
the different mechanisms of magma eruption and
emplacement, and their relationships with pre-eruptive
magmatic processes. Nisyros and the adjoining volcanic
islands, in the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc, represent a
wonderful key zone for fulfilling the aims of the school due to
the presence, in a small and accessible area, of a large
variability of volcanic rocks emplaced by effusive, extrusive
and variably explosive activity. The general volcanological
history and the magma evolution of Nisyros are also quite well
known. About half time of the school will be spent in the field
to describe rocks and eruption processes, trying also to
promote discussions among the participants. The program
comprises six thematic days organised in both field and class
lectures.

The school will offer to the participants a broad spectrum of
topics, including: tectonics, magma genesis and evolution the
South Aegean Active Arc, explosive eruptions and their
deposits in submarine and subaerial environment, magma
mingling evidence in lava flows and domes, hydrothermal
activity and geothermal energy, volcanic hazard and risk
assessment at dormant volcanoes, monitoring networks

The target for the school will be graduate students,
Ph.D students and post-docs in volcanology (max and
min numbers of participants are 30 and 20,
respectively).

Deadline for Early registration is 15th June 2009 with Final
registration before 20th July 2009.
