Ph.D. Fellowship - Rheology of the Earth
From: Freysteinn Sigmundsson <fs@xxxxx>
***********************************************************

A fellowship for Ph.D. study within the crustal deformation research
group and the Nordic Volcanological Center at the Institute of Earth
Sciences, University of Iceland is open for application. The support
is for Ph.D. study on advancing current understanding of the rheology
of the Earth by measuring and modelling ongoing deformation in Iceland
induced by retreating ice caps and their variable load. The project is
supervised by Dr. Freysteinn Sigmundsson.

An extensive data set of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images
acquired by satellites covering Iceland's ice caps and rift zones is
to be analyzed with InSAR (interfermetric analysis of SAR images), to
constrain present-day deformation. These measurements will be
complemented with GPS-measurements of deformation around Iceland's ice
cap. The project will be conducted in international collaboration, in
particular with Dr. Andy Hooper at Delft University of Technology, The
Netherlands (for the InSAR component) and Dr. Erik Sturkell at
University of Gothenburg (for the GPS component). Finite-element
modelling of the resulting deformation field is anticipated to
constrain crust and mantle rheology and to increase our understanding
of how the Earth deforms in response to retreating ice cap and
glaciers due to warmer climate. Particular emphasis will be on
constraining spatial variations in rheology within the Iceland rift
system and surroundings, and how magma generation and transport at
volcanic systems is influenced by ice load variations. The successful
candidate is expected to start no later than September 1, 2009.
Applicants need to hold a MS-degree in geophysics, geology,
engineering or computer science.

Application deadline is April 15, 2009.

For further information and application procedure contact Freysteinn
Sigmundsson at fs@xxxxx

(away from email March 21-30).
