The position is offered on a tenure-track, full-time basis. The successful appointee is expected to take up duty by the May 2009. The main function of the Seismic Research Centre is to monitor seismic and volcanic activity in the English-speaking Caribbean and to provide accurate and timely advice to the governments of the region on all matters relating to these subjects. Applicants should have a good degree in an earth science or relevant physical science subject and hold a postgraduate qualification such as an MSc or PhD in a relevant aspect of Physical Volcanology. Candidates should preferably have experience in the operation of geodetic measurement techniques, statistical and graphical analysis and computer programming. Experience in any of the following areas: i) installing/running GPS, tilt and other geodetic instruments; ii) writing data acquisition code; iii) use of GAMIT/GLOBK in GPS processing and iv) use of Perl and shell script in computing and v) numerical modelling particularly on volcanoes will be a distinct advantage. Prior work experience in a similar institute would be considered an asset. The position will be filled at the level of Research Fellow. For appointment at the level of Research Fellow a Ph.D. in a relevant area of study (Volcanology/Geology/Geophysics) is required. Candidates for the posts of who do not have a Ph.D. are eligible for appointment at the level of Junior Research Fellow but will be expected to pursue an active research programme leading towards the award of this degree. The post requires frequent travel to all of the islands of the Eastern Caribbean and field work which is sometimes strenuous. Applicants should be physically and in good health. Good communication skills are necessary; of particular importance is the ability to communicate science to non-scientists. A good command of English is absolutely essential. A valid driver’s permit, or willingness to acquire one rapidly, would be extremely useful.
