************************************************************** From: Pierre Delmelle <pd512@xxxxxxxxxx> ************************************************************** A ESRC fully funded PhD is available at the University of York for a UK/EU student. A minimum of an undergraduate degree in natural sciences, applied sciences, economics or social sciences is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Livelihood and risk strategies in the face of volcanic hazards ------------------------------------------------------------------- Supervisors: Dr. Pierre Delmelle (pd512@xxxxxxxxxx) & Dr. Jim Smart (jcrs102@xxxxxxxxxx) Population growth puts increasing pressure on the fertile slopes of volcanoes. However, current usage patterns and decision making may produce sub-optimal outcomes for the livelihoods and health of local populations. Drawing on economics, volcanology and environmental science in combination, this interdisciplinary research will adopt a case study approach with a Central American focus to provide a better understanding of the drivers which engender apparently 'risky' behaviours. The study will help policy makers to develop more appropriate and effective strategies for volcanic hazard management, with consequent improvements in livelihood opportunities and health for the local population. These awards are only available to UK and other EU students. Further information on the projects is available on the Environment Department website (www.york.ac.uk/depts/eeem). Initial enquiries and expressions of interest should be directed to the named supervisor(s). Formal applications using the form which can be downloaded from the University of York website (www.york.ac.uk/graduatestudy/applying/paper/forms/index.htm) should be submitted to The Graduate Schools Office, University of York, Heslington, York YO10 5DD by 13th March. Please include with your application (i) a covering letter indicating why you are particularly well-suited to the project for which you are applying, and (ii) a full CV. Interviews will be held on Monday 6th April. ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
