********************************************************* International Volcanological Field School 2009: Katmai, Alaska and Mutnovsky/Gorely, Kamchatka >From Pavel Izbekov <pavel@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> ********************************************************* The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), in partnership with the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and Kamchatka State University, offers annual field trips to Katmai National Park in Alaska and Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes in Kamchatka. Katmai trip (June 7-20, 2009) will be offered immediately prior to and as part of the JKASP-2009 meeting (http://gps.alaska.edu/JKASP/). The trip provides a unique opportunity to visit the Valley of Ten Thousands Smokes, the site of the largest eruption in 20th century. Participants will explore products of the 1912 Katmai eruption, i.e. ignimbrite sheet, Novarupta Dome, and Katmai Caldera. Mutnovsky and Gorely trip is scheduled for August 7-21, 2009. Participants will have an opportunity to explore two active arc volcanoes - Mutnovsky and Gorely, featuring a wide range of volcanic processes and phenomena, from products of caldera-forming eruptions to active fumaroles. Students will receive 3 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit through UAF. Detailed information and application forms are available at http://www.uaf.edu/geology/InternVolcanologySchool/2000index.htm. Application deadline for both trips is April 1, 2009.
