Crystallisation history of rhyolite magmas at Tarawera volcano, New Zealand

Tarawera volcano is part of the Okataina caldera, New Zealand. It has
been active in the late Quaternary on a millennial timescale, with
eruptions involving multiple batches of rhyolite magma triggered by
basalt intrusion. It is the most recently active rhyolite volcano in
New Zealand, being the site of a rhyolite plinian eruption at AD1314
and a basaltic eruption in AD 1886. The high frequency of rhyolite
magma recharge makes the volcano an excellent opportunity to
investigate the longevity of crystal mush, and the rates at which it
is re-activated into eruption. This is important in forecasting future
activity and identifying petrological precursor phenomena.

The PhD project is part of a joint effort between University of
Auckland (Phil Shane, Jan Lindsay), University of California Los
Angeles (Axel Schmitt) and GNS Science, using state-of-the-art
geochemical instruments to examine elemental and isotopic patterns
recorded in crystals. Laboratory work will involve Th/U age profiling
and Ti thermometry of zircon crystals. We seek a motivated student
committed to independent research with a background in geochemistry or
petrology. Stipend for 3 years at NZ $ 25k per annum (tax free) plus
fees. Applicants should provide a CV including grades, statement of
motivation, and contact details of 3 referees. Deadline March 31,
2009. Further information and applications to Phil Shane
(pa.shane@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
