Dear Colleagues, We invite you to participate in the GMPV5 session entitled "Volatiles: from the mantle, through magmas, up to the atmosphere, back to the mantle" within the EGU 2009 conference in Vienna (Austria), 19-24 April. Session description: Estimates of volatile fluxes between the different terrestrial reservoirs are fundamental. They enable to understand the Earth origin and its evolution trough geological times, as well as the crustal magma dynamics and the eruptive behaviour of a volcano. Finally, quantifying the release of volatiles to the atmosphere is crucial given their significant impact on environment, human health and even climate. This session will focus on the whole cycle of volatiles in subduction zones. This includes slab dehydration, melting processes, and the degassing of magma during its transfer to the surface. We welcome contributions from all disciplines interested in volatiles from mantle geochemistry to volcanology. Experimental, theoretical and modeling approaches as well as field measurements will be considered. Note that the deadline for abstract submission, 13 January, is very soon.
