Dear Colleagues,

I would very much appreciate it if you could advertise the following
positions.
I apologize in advance for any multiple listings.

PhD and MS opportunities in experimental volcanology/petrology at the
University of Missouri

Highly motivated and academically strong graduate students (Ph.D. and M.S.)
are needed to work on experimental volcanology and petrology projects in the
Department of Geological Sciences, University of Missouri-Columbia. Specific
projects include: (i) investigating the physical properties and
thermodynamics of subduction zone magmas, focusing on the effect of single
and mixed volatile species on melt properties and feedback relations between
magma physics and chemistry; (ii) rheology, thermal properties and
emplacement of large-volume basaltic flows; (iii) studies of candidate
astrominerals that may be present in circumstellar dust shells.

Laboratory facilities at MU include high temperature muffle furnaces for
sample synthesis; parallel plate and concentric cylinder viscometers
allowing viscosity measurements over 12 orders of magnitude; high temperature
differential scanning calorimeter and drop calorimeter, allowing heat
capacity determination to 1400šC. Many additional facilities are available
on the MU campus and at nearby institutions.

The subduction zone magmas project is funded by an NSF CAREER award;
research on this project will also involve fieldwork at active Guatemalan
volcanoes, visits to other institutions for high-pressure synthesis of
hydrous melts, and thermodynamic modeling. Applicants pursuing the PhD will
be encouraged to complete a Minor in College Teaching, which will be
excellent preparation for a future faculty position.

Applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in geology or a closely related
field such as physics, chemistry, materials science or engineering. Previous
high-temperature laboratory experience would be helpful but is not
essential. For further information, please contact Dr Alan Whittington
(whittingtona@xxxxxxxxxxxx). Further details about the department and
available facilities may be found at http://geology.missouri.edu/

Informal interviews can also be arranged at the Fall AGU meeting in San
Francisco.
