****************************************************************** Piton de la Fournaise eruption From: Thomas Staudacher <staud@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ****************************************************************** The eruption at Piton de la Fournaise, which started on September 21, 15:30 (local time), stopped after 11 days of activity on October 2, 4h45 in the morning. The eruption vent was situated on the western border of the Dolomieu crater and magma probably rose up from the fracture between the "Dolomieu piston" from the April 2007 330m crater collapse and bedrock. It took place entirely within Dolomieu crater, where a small lava flow formed on the crater floor. The erupted volume was estimated from airborne pictures to about 850000m^3 and represents one of the smallest eruptions. No significant summit inflation related to the eruption was recorded and further phases of this eruption are not impossible within the next days or weeks. Direct sampling of lava was completely inaccessible, due to the location of the vent inside of the collapsed crater and only Pele's hair were sampled around the summit. Th.
