******************************************************************* From: Thomas Staudacher <staud@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ******************************************************************* September 13, 2008 Reactivation of the activity of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano (PdF) is observed by the observatoire volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise/IPGP. General seismicity was high within early August with up to 100 seismic events per day and magnitudes up to 3. In addition we recorded during August and September five seismic crises on August 4, 15 and 31 and September 8 and 9. Permanent GPS measurements indicated an inflation of PdF since early August and a widening of the Dolomieu crater of 6.5cm on a north–south direction. On September 12, 2008, between 10 and 11:20 and 15:00 and 20:00, small episodes of tremor were recorded. Field observations by an OVPF/IPGP member confirmed increased degassing on the south-west Dolomieu crater and H2S in the air, but no magma within the crater. Simultaneously small amounts of SO2 were detected by the OVPF/IPGP NOVAC network, based on the Enclos Fouqué caldera rim. A new eruption within the next days or weeks is possible. http://ovpf.univ-reunion.fr http://www.ipgp.fr ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
