********************************************************* From: Val Troll <valentin.troll@xxxxxxxxx> ********************************************************* Uppsala University hereby declares the following positions to be open for application: Two PhD positions at the Department of Earth Sciences. Starting date: October 2008 or later. We are looking for two PhD students, one in petrology and geochemistry of volcanic rocks with an emphasis on magma crust interaction processes and another one in tectonics and geodynamics focusing on plate –mantle coupling/decoupling. Research directions within the program include traditional and experimental petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy, theoretical modeling, diagenetic processes and tectonic modeling. Apart from basic equipment, an electron microprobe, a high-pressure laboratory (diamond anvil cell), a tectonic laboratory and an SEM exist amongst the facilities. The maximum employment period is 4 years. Petrology and geochemistry (UFV-PA 2008/1851): This project will involve analysis of major elements, trace elements and radiogenic and stable isotopes in rocks and minerals from a selected range of subduction zone volcanoes, including Popocatepetl, Mexico, Krakatau, Indonesia and Vesuvius, Italy amongst others, aiming at a better understanding of the dynamic evolution of explosive volcanic systems from source to the surface. The candidate has a background in petrology and in geochemical analysis and should be willing to travel to the field localities if required and to analytical facilities in Sweden and abroad. Special attention will be given to candidates with experience of field-work and analytical methodology in magmatic and metamorphic petrology, as well as volcanology. Tectonics and geodynamics (UFV-PA 2008/1852): A key element of interaction between mantle convection and plate motion is the thermo-mechanics of the coupling/decoupling between the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. This project aims to better constrain the coupling/decoupling of different tectonic plates (e.g. continental, oceanic).1D and 2D numerical and 3D experimental models will be constructed, which simulate a lithosphere-asthenosphere system, and the parameter space that leads to coupled or decoupled flow will be studied. The project will focus on the evolution of finite strain ellipses and lattice preferred orientation (LPO) as a function of depth. Numerical and analogue models will be used to understand the effect of coupling-magnitude and orientation (mantle drag) on the stress and deformation field within the lithosphere. Suitable candidates will have a basic degree in either solid earth geology/geophysics or physics with a basic background in numerical modeling. Those candidates who have a basic degree in solid-earth geology should have taken a university course in geophysics. Good skills in oral and written English are required for both projects. The PhD positions are for a maximum of four years and may include departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). In order to be eligible for these positions, the candidate has to be admitted, or be in the process of being admitted, as a PhD student at Uppsala University. Application should be written in English and include a brief description of research interest and past experience, a CV, copies of exam, degrees and grades, a copy of Bachelor or Master thesis (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. The candidates are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons. For more information, please contact Prof. Hemin Koyi, phone +46 18-471 256, e-mail: hemin.Koyi@xxxxxxxxx or Prof. Valentin Troll, phone +4618-471 2570, e-mail: valentin.troll@xxxxxxxxxx Union representatives are Anders Grundström, SACO-rådet, phone +46 18-471 5380, Carin Söderhäll, TCO/ST, phone +46 18-471 1996 and Stefan Djurström, SEKO, phone +46 18-471 3315.
