Applications are invited for the following position:

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Hazard and Disaster
Management in the Department of Geological Sciences, University of
Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

The Hazard and Disaster Management programmes (BSc(Hons), PG Dip. Sc.,
MSc and PhD) at University of Canterbury aim to introduce graduates in
the sciences to the realities of managing natural hazards in society,
with the goal of improving the use of geosciences in disaster management
decision-making. This position therefore requires a highly-qualified
research scientist who is motivated to apply science for the benefit of
society, and to communicate it to non-scientists at all levels.

Applicants for this position will be expected to lead and contribute to
teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise
postgraduate research students in the Hazard and Disaster Management
programme, and develop their own research programmes. An excellent
research and publication track record in relevant aspects of the earth
sciences and their application to hazard mitigation are a key
requirement. Evidence of a commitment to excellent teaching and
outstanding research with potential or demonstrated ability to lead
research programmes and gain external funding will be required.
Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary teaching and research, and
ability to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in
geology and/or engineering geology are essential. Candidates with
experience in the application of leading-edge technologies to earth
science, hazard assessment and mitigation may be preferred, as may those
with experience in delivering problem-based learning programmes.

Applicants must have a PhD and postdoctoral experience in an appropriate
area of geoscience and its application to hazard and disaster
management, with a considerable research track record appropriate for
their level of application. The Department of Geological Sciences has a
high national and international profile and has excellent teaching and
research facilities. For more information see
www.geol.canterbury.ac.nz. Enquiries of an academic nature may be made
to Professor Jarg Pettinga, Head of Department, at

The Hazard and Disaster Management teaching and research programmes at
University of Canterbury are now well established and in strong demand;
the appointee will be expected to take a prominent role in their further
development, and in the activities of the Natural Hazards Research
Centre based in the Department of Geological Sciences.

The Department is committed to equality in the workplace and
applications from all suitably qualified persons are encouraged.

Applications for this position should include a completed University of
Canterbury application form, a curriculum vitae, a summary of recent
research achievements and a one- page outline of their academic and
research goals in New Zealand. Applications must be received by the
closing date of 31 July 2008. It is anticipated that the appointee will
take up the position by in early 2009.
