Sc., MSc and PhD) at University of Canterbury aim to introduce graduates in the sciences to the realities of managing natural hazards in society, with the goal of improving the use of geosciences in disaster management decision-making. This position therefore requires a highly-qualified research scientist who is motivated to apply science for the benefit of society, and to communicate it to non-scientists at all levels. Applicants for this position will be expected to lead and contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise postgraduate research students in the Hazard and Disaster Management programme, and develop their own research programmes. An excellent research and publication track record in relevant aspects of the earth sciences and their application to hazard mitigation are a key requirement. Evidence of a commitment to excellent teaching and outstanding research with potential or demonstrated ability to lead research programmes and gain external funding will be required. Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary teaching and research, and ability to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in geology and/or engineering geology are essential. Candidates with experience in the application of leading-edge technologies to earth science, hazard assessment and mitigation may be preferred, as may those with experience in delivering problem-based learning programmes. Applicants must have a PhD and postdoctoral experience in an appropriate area of geoscience and its application to hazard and disaster management, with a considerable research track record appropriate for their level of application.
