**************************************************************** CEV Short Course in Iceland From: Shinji Takarada <s-takarada@xxxxxxxxxx> **************************************************************** The CEV will be running a 2-day post conference short course from August 23-24 at the University of Iceland on "Recent developments in explosive volcanism" following the 2008 IAVCEI meeting. The purpose of the short course is to review the major products of explosive volcanoes and highlight major advances in understanding their origins. This short course will appeal to students in volcanology and geologists who would benefit from being updated in volcanological processes and techniques. Costs for the short course are minimal (ISK 6.800, ~88US$, ~55EURO), and will cover the costs of lunch and the course manual. Information can be found at http://www.iavcei2008.hi.is/page/i08-explosiveshortcourse To register, please indicate your participation on the conference registration form. The proposed schedule and presenters are: Day 1 1. Conduit dynamics, vesiculation and fragmentation processes (Bruce Houghton) 2. Plume dynamics (Andy Woods) 3. Submarine explosive volcanism (Jocelyn McPhie and Sharon Allen) 4. Understanding explosive volcanoes in field investigations and what to record and sample (Bruce Houghton) 5. Degassing processes (Clive Oppenheimer) 6. Fall deposits (Costanza Bonadonna) Day 2 7. Pyroclastic flows and surges (Mike Branney) 8. Debris avalanches (Shinji Takarada) 9. Volcanic hazards (Clive Oppenheimer) 10. Numerical simulations (Amanda Clarke) 11. Analogue modelling (Jeremy Philips) 12. Discussion We look forward to your participation.
