Invited speakers include: Margaret Mangan (USGS) Yan Lavallee (LMU Munich) Isolde Belien (University of Oregon) Session description: Magma is a dynamically-evolving mixture of three phases with very different physical properties: gas bubbles (compressible, buoyant, low viscosity); crystals (incompressible, rigid); liquid (incompressible, high viscosity). Together, these three phases drive and mediate magma flow, and are ultimately responsible for the great richness of physical behaviour exhibited by volcanic and magmatic systems. This session will explore the causes and consequences of magma movement in the subsurface, and the physical properties and processes that mediate it. We invite contributions, based upon laboratory experiments, analogue or conceptual models or numerical simulations, which consider any aspect of the movement of magma.
