Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the following session on
volcanic disaster risk reduction that will be convened at the 2008
IAVCEI General Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland, 18-22 August, 2008. We
plan for this to be a stimulating discussion forum, so please come along
to the session and share your experiences and research.

4-g Volcanic Disaster Risk Reduction - Exploring pathways to
community-based resilience

Within the global disaster management community more emphasis is being
placed on reducing disaster risk by tackling people's vulnerability and
encouraging a multi-disciplinary approach to disaster prevention. For a
number of reasons, this broader emphasis has been slow to permeate to
research and management approaches in volcanic regions. To date, much
volcanic social science research has had a limited focus on individuals'
risk perceptions, with an emphasis on improving preparedness and
behavioural response through increased volcanic risk awareness. This
session hopes to redress this balance and examine the much broader range
of factors which influence vulnerability and how communities can
actively reduce these risks and become more resilient.

This session is seeking contributions that address:

- Innovative techniques for identifying vulnerable groups and
individuals;
- A resilience and capacity building perspective for disaster risk
reduction;
- The implications of a risk reduction approach for the governance of
volcanic risk;
- Innovative approaches to land use planning;
- Applying multi-disciplinary approaches to volcanic disaster risk
reduction (bridging the gap between physical science, social science,
development agency approaches and policy);
- Community participation in the design and evaluation of warning
systems;
- Participatory research methodologies, including action research, that
engage a variety of stakeholders.

Conveners:
K. Haynes, Centre for Risk and Community Safety, RMIT, Australia; and
Risk Frontiers, Macquarie University, Australia,

T. Mitchell, Institute of Development Studies, Brighton, UK,

G. Leonard, Geological and Nuclear Sciences, NZ, g.leonard@xxxxxxxxxx

The abstract submission deadline is 1 April 2008 and early-bird
discounted registration also finishes on this date. Further information
can be found at  http://www.iavcei.org/IAVCEI.htm
