Ph.D. Studentship - Multiphase dynamics of pyroclastic flows
From: Greg Valentine <gav4@xxxxxxxxxxx>
******************************************************************************

A funded Ph.D. studentship is available in the Geology Department,
University at Buffalo, for research that applies multiphase numerical
modeling to the dynamics of pyroclastic flows and resulting
ignimbrite facies. The successful candidate will work under the
advisement of Greg Valentine, who will be joining the UB faculty in
August, 2008; the student will also interact extensively with other
members of the volcanology group at Buffalo (see
http://www.geology.buffalo.edu/research/volcanostudies.shtml), and
will collaborate with computational fluid dynamicists at Los Alamos
National Laboratory. There will be opportunities for field visits to
sites that exhibit important features of ignimbrite facies.

Candidates should have a general background in geology and/or
geophysics as well as quantitative training such as continuum
mechanics, fluid dynamics, or engineering. Interested candidates are
encouraged to contact Greg Valentine directly at gav4@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Review of applications begins on 1 February 2008. Detailed
information on the application process and the graduate program at UB
can be found at http://www.geology.buffalo.edu/graduate/index.shtml
