Dear Colleagues,

we invite you to consider submission of contributions to the following
session at the EGU General Assembly 2008, which will be held in Vienna
from 13 - 18 April 2008 (http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2008):

NH3.5: Short-term volcanic hazard and eruption forecasting: theory and
case studies

Division Program: Natural Hazards

Session Description:

One of the most critical issues of volcanic hazard evaluation is the
definition of the expected time-scales and scenarios under impending
eruption conditions. In fact, while medium-long term hazard evaluation
is mostly useful for land-use planning, short- term hazard defines the
timing and extent of Civil Protection operations that must be rapidly
set up during the agitated phases of transition from volcanic unrest to
volcanic crisis. Differently from medium-long term hazard evaluation,
this implies the heavy involvement of information coming from volcano
monitoring networks, and the need of an established procedure leading to
rapid decisions by scientists on the current state of the volcano. This
session invites contributions dealing with the difficult issue of
understanding volcanoes while they change their status and are prone to
erupt, with the aim of discussing the principles and paradigms for a
confident short-term volcanic hazard evaluation. Approaches based on
theoretical studies, forward and inverse modeling, statistical analysis,
and personal experience are all welcome. Particularly welcome are
accounts on real cases, either successful or not, which evidence the
principles followed for the scientific management of volcanic crises
throughout the world.

Conveners: Paolo Papale, Warner Marzocchi, Chris Newhall

Submission Deadline: January 14, 2008

Sincerely

The Session Conveners
