******************************************************************** From: Adam Carter <ajc44+@xxxxxxxx> ******************************************************************** Based on information from the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) and the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), an explosive eruption occurred at Bezymianny Volcano (Kamchatka, Russia) on 14 October 2007. Following this, images were collected from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). A daytime image was collected on 19 October containing partial cloud cover, followed by a clear night time image on 20 October. Both images showed thermal anomalies over the dome and on to the southeast flank. A fresh pyroclastic flow (PF) was visible and traveled ~5.5 km to the southeast. A maximum night time thermal infrared (TIR) temperature was 56 C at the dome and 15 C on the PF deposit at a distance of 4 km from the dome. Although partially obscured by clouds in the visible/near infrared (VNIR), the high TIR temperatures at the dome are consistent with the emplacement of a short lava lobe, which was also observed in field photographs. A PDF version of the ASTER images for the 19 October (A) and 20 October (B) can be viewed at: http://ivis.eps.pitt.edu/data/Kamchatka/19-20Oct07_Bezy.pdf A link to the KVERT report (in Russian) with photos is available at: http://www.kscnet.ru/ivs/kvert/current/bzm/index.html The ASTER Rapid Response program, operating in tandem with the Alaska Volcano Observatory's routine satellite monitoring, will continue to collect visible, infrared, and thermal IR data of the new activity at Bezymianny. In addition, the other currently-active Kamchatka volcanoes, Karimsky and Sheveluch, are also being observed as part of the same ASTER program. Adam Carter (U. Pittsburgh) Michael Ramsey (U.
