Dear colleagues,

Please consider submitting an abstract to the
following session at the European Geosciences
Union General Assembly 2008,Vienna, Austria, 13 18 April 2008 :

GMPV16: Emplacement of magma pulses and growth of magma bodies

Description:

Field and geochronological studies suggest that
plutons grow by accretion of repeated, discrete
pulses. Similarly, cycles of cooling and
re-heating recorded by crystals in volcanic
products indicate that new magma is periodically
injected in magma chambers. Depending on their
emplacement rate and on their ability to
amalgamate, repeated magma injections can either
rapidly solidify or build up an active magma
chamber. Magma bodies evolution is related to the
process that control the timescale and the
spatial distribution of the successive injections
and understanding how magma bodies grow has
fundamental implications for the link between
volcanism and plutonism. The objective of the
session is to gather contributions from various
investigation disciplines (field geology,
structural geology, petrology, geochronology,
modelling, etc) that would provide insights on
mechanisms of plutons and magma chamber emplacement and growth.
