Professor Position in VOLCANOLOGY opening at Laboratoire Magmas et
Volcans (LMV) – Blaise Pascal University, Clermont-Ferrand, France.

The Volcano Group of the LMV is looking for a new professor to engage in
top level research and to strengthen the teaching base of the Earth
Science Department. The candidate will be expected to contribute
expertise and dynamism to the existing fields covered by the Volcano
Group, including eruption dynamics, remote sensing of deformation,
volcano-tectonics, modelling of deformation and eruptive processes,
volcano geophysics, volcano petrology, volcano hazards and risk. It is
also desirable that the candidate would be able to combine research with
the other laboratory groups (Geochemistry Group, the Petrology Group,
and the Lithospheric Transfer Group).

The Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans is a CNRS research unit attached to
the Observatoire de Physique du Globe de Clermont and the Earth Science
Department of the Blaise Pascal University. The laboratory is situated
in the centre of the Massif Central volcanic field. The LMV contains a
60 strong permanent personnel base of volcanologists, geochemists and
experimental petrologists, numerous visitors and a 20-strong
postgraduate group. The large size and interactivity of the laboratory
provides a stimulating environment for volcanological research. This
is aided by an extensive international collaboration network and the
presence of the IRD Institute for Research and Development component
dedicated to research collaboration with emerging nations especially in
the Andes and the Pacific islands.

The volcanology group has two main themes: eruptive processes and
volcano-tectonics. Eruptive processes are studied in the field and the
laboratory with emphasis of observation of eruptions (Seismology,
Doppler radar, remote sensing) and laboratory modelling of volcanic
flows (analogue, numerical and experimental). The volcano-tectonics
theme comprises observation: radar interferommetry, remote sensing,
geophysics, structural analysis, and laboratory modelling (numerical and
analogue). Associated work is done on lahars, lava flows, debris
avalanche emplacement, and volcanic hazards and risk.

The Earth Science Department contains 30 teaching/research staff, that
are also members of the LMV. Teaching covers a broad base in Earth
Sciences and Earth and Life Sciences, from University entry level to
thesis level. The incoming professor will be expected to teach
predominantly in French, and to develop a strong international aspect to
the teaching including English language courses. Salary and conditions
are set out by ministerial decree and depend on experience.

Interested applicants are invited to make haste to contact the head of
volcanology (Benjamin van Wyk de Vries: b.vanwyk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
<mailto:b.vanwyk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>).

For International Candidates: note that a preliminary national
qualifying application round is required for all candidates, that must
be completed before November 2007. (Candidates will be assisted though
all steps of the application).
