******************************************************** Unesco World Heritage application - Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) >From : Guillaume LEVIEUX <guillaume.levieux@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ******************************************************** In 2008, Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) is applying to be listed in the Unesco World Heritage (http://whc.unesco.org/). Reunion Island is applying on grounds of its natural heritage, because we believe this island represents a great open book about the Earth's history. Within barely two months, the cyclone « Gamede » and an outstanding volcanic eruption of Piton de la Fournaise have also turned this history book into a truly topical news magazine. Here, we are convinced we are on an exceptional Island, but we need your opinion to help convince the Unesco experts. Whether you are from Hawaii or from the Galapogos, whether you are familiar with Indonesia or with Italy, your external points of view matter to us. So please tell us in a few lines or in a few pages why you think Reunion Island is a unique site in the world, which should be shown and preserved for future generations. Every one of your contributions is important to help our island qualify for the Unesco World Heritage List. We would like to ask you three questions: - In what respects do you believe Reunion Island to be an outstanding example of the big stages of the Earth's History, including significant on-going geological processes involved in the development of landforms and significant geomorphic or physiographic features? - In your opinion, are there other places in the world where such intense constructive and destructive processes - volcanism and erosion ? face each other on such a small island? - And finally, if you just agree that Reunion Island deserves its « World Heritage » label, let us know in a short message to guillaume.levieux@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <//guillaume%2Elevieux@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/> !
