Recent enhanced activity triggers changes in risk perception: Turrialba
Volcano, Costa Rica. April 10, 2007.

Despite monthly reports of activity, at least 2 extraordinary field reports, and
abundant information on our web page (http://www.ovsicori.una.ac.cr ) about
rapid changes, misperceptions persist in communities around this volcano and
other audiences.

Within these recent 2 weeks, a growing number of phone calls from government
officials, journalists and general public keep us busy.
Due to clear visibility, changes in wind patterns, and heavy visitation to the
summit area; rumors, reports and concerns multiply.

Rapid changes in Turrialba`s activity include: growth of fumarolic field,
heating of new areas within and outside the crater area, burning of vegetation
and enrichment of gases. A new seismic station was installed in the crater area
and is currently providing valuable information to OVSICORI`s monitoring group.
