VS006 - Caldera I - Calderas and resurgent calderas

This is to invite you to participate to the Session VS006 “Caldera I - Calderas and resurgent calderas”, which will be held at the IUGG Meeting in Perugia, July 2-13. For detail consult http://www.iugg2007perugia.it. Caldera collapse and resurgence are common features in volcanic systems and have been classically interpreted in light of inflation and deflation processes of magma reservoirs. Their size can vary significantly as well as their dynamics. Such variability can depend upon both the characteristics of the volcano, including its magmatic feeding system, and/or of the crust, and regional stress regime. Pre-existing regional structures may influence stress propagation or may be reactivated during collapse and resurgence. The regional stress field may directly influence the formation of new structures, and the shape of calderas and resurgent blocks. This Session is devoted to the presentation, discussion and comparison of caldera collapse and resurgence case histories. Contributions based on geological, sedimentological, structural, petrological, geophysical investigations, as well as on variable types of modelling, are solicited. Contributions on active calderas and resurgent calderas, with obvious implications on volcanic hazards assessment, are also welcome. Participants are encouraged to register for Field Trip FTV007 on the Neapolitan volcanoes, during which the active Campi Flegrei and Ischia resurgent calderas will be illustrated.

VW 001 – Guidelines for the preparation of volcanic hazards maps

This is to invite you to participate to the Workshop VW001 “Guidelines for the preparation of volcanic hazards maps”, which will be held at the IUGG Meeting in Perugia, July 2-13. For detail consult http://www.iugg2007perugia.it. The IAVCEI Commission “Mitigation of Volcanic Disasters” (Giovanni Orsi, Claus Siebe and Jan Lindsay, leaders) is currently focusing efforts on volcanic hazards maps as these are probably the single most important tool and first step in volcanic hazards mitigation. The rationale behind this effort is not only to promote the preparation of hazards maps among members of our community, but also to seek consensus on the criteria and format used in the preparation of such maps. This workshop will be the continuation of the workshop of similar topic held at the Pucon (Chile) IAVCEI meeting by the CMVD. Participants to the workshop are encouraged to join the field trip on the Neapolitan Volcanoes (leaded by G. Orsi, R. Santacroce, S. de Vita and M. Di Vito) in which the Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei hazards maps will be presented and discussed.
