Colleagues:

The ASTER satellite instrument continues to be tasked with imaging the
ongoing activity at three Kamchatkan volcanoes: Bezymianny, Kluichevskoi,
and Sheveluch.

Previous ASTER results from Bezymianny were posted to the listserv on 26
Jan 2007) by A. Carter. The new visible and thermal IR data, collected on
4 Feb 2007 have been downloaded and preliminarily processed. A PDF file
can be found here:

http://ivis.eps.pitt.edu/docs/Bezymianny_04Feb07.pdf

The preliminary TIR analysis shows that the Bezymianny PF deposit is still
thermally detectable (approximately 10-15 C above the average background).
The hottest pixel on the summit lava dome has an absolute temperature of
5.5 C. It is in the same location as the previous report -- now seen as an
area of intense fumarolic activity.

An interesting new thermal anomaly has also been detected in the crater of
Kluichevskoi. There are two thermally-elevated TIR pixels (13C and 18C),
which are fairly significant considering the elevation of the Kluichevskoi
summit crater (4835 m). This thermal area corresponds to the dark region
seen in the VNIR image.

A nighttime overpass for Bezymianny is scheduled for 5 February and more
information will be reported here.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, http://www.avo.alaska.edu/), KVERT
(http://www.kscnet.ru/ivs/kvert/updates.shtml) and the University of
Pittsburgh (UPitt: http://www.geology.pitt.edu/) continue to monitor
activity at Bezymianny, Sheveluch, and now Kluichevskoi. For more
information on the ASTER sensor and Science Team please visit this
website:

Cheers,
Mike Ramsey
