Dear Colleagues,

The Earth-orbiting ASTER imagining sensor has collected several images of
recent changes at Bezymianny and Sheveluch Volcanoes, Kamchatka Peninsula,
Russia. Bezymianny erupted on 24 December 2006 at 09:17 UTC (KVERT report:
http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/avoreport.php?view=kaminfo&id=213&type=kaminfo&month=December&year=2006),
creating a ~10 km ASL ash cloud and associated pyroclastic flow deposits.

On 4 Jan 2007 a daytime ASTER scene (15 m/pixel) was collected in rapid
response mode, and the data show a thermally-elevated, ~6.5 km
long pyroclastic flow over fresh snow. The thermal infrared (TIR, 90
m/pixel) data show a clear thermal anomaly over the entire deposit, with
temperatures up to 17 degrees Celsius above the background (-33 Celsius).
Over 2 sq. km was thermally-elevated based on TIR observations. In
addition, much higher temperatures (33 Celsius above background) were
recorded over a small portion of the existing lava dome, suggesting a new
post-explosion lava lobe may be extruding.

A short PDF report with satellite and field images is available here:
http://ivis.eps.pitt.edu/docs/Bezymianny_Jan-07.pdf . Please cite the ASTER
Science Team and AVO if any data/text are used, except for the aerial
photo which was taken by Yu. Demyanchuk.

ASTER will continue to observe both volcanoes, with the next scheduled set
of orbital observations occurring on 29-30 Jan (Sheveluch) and 5-6
February (Bezymianny). More information will be posted here following
these observations.

Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, http://www.avo.alaska.edu/), KVERT
(http://www.kscnet.ru/ivs/kvert/updates.shtml) and the University of
Pittsburgh (UPitt: http://www.geology.pitt.edu/) continue to successfully
monitor activity at Bezymianny and Sheveluch. For more information on the
ASTER sensor and Science Team please visit this website:

Cheers,
