On October, 30th, 2006, at Azores University (Amphitheatre B) there will be a
public session to commemorate the publication of a Special Issue of
the ?Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research? (JVGR). This volume is
entirely dedicated to Azores volcanism studies. During the session, which will
be moderated by the Azores University Rector, Robert I. Tilling, researcher of
the United States Geological Survey (USA) and co-editor of that special issue
will present a brief talk on ?Comparison of the Hawaiian and Azores hotspots."

The manuscript handling and editing of that Special Issue of JVGR,
entitled ?Volcanic Geology of Azores Islands?, were coordinated by João Carlos
Nunes, of the Azores University (as corresponding guest-editor), in close
collaboration with Robert I. Tilling, Scientist Emeritus from the USGS and
Gudmundur E. Sigvaldason, researcher of the Nordic Volcanological Institute,
Iceland, recently passed away.

The Special Issue, which was published in Volume 156, Nr. 1-2 of the JVGR,
consists of 186 pages and includes 12 research papers on volcanologic and
allied topics. All the manuscripts were processed using the rigorous review
process according to Elsevier Editors (Netherlands) and JVGR policy and
involved 31 technical reviewers.
